Buffallo in Spring
Resting Buffalo, Nez Perce Creek, Yellowstone, May, 1983

In 1877 after the Nez Perce Indians crossed the Firehole River while fleeing General O. O. Howard's troops, they traveled up a stream which was later named Nez Perce Creek "to commemorate General Howard's pursuit of that tribe of Indians, who followed up the valley through which the stream runs".

After all these years, wild Yellowstone Buffalo management continues to be a contentious topic in the greater Yellowstone area. While we are largely missing current images of dead slaughtered buffalos as seen years ago, the managed killings are still happening but in a hidden, more quiet low-key way.

Current buffalo killing and hazing status reports are available from the Buffallo Field Campaign link below.
